The Power of Questions
Questions are so powerful that the writers of the gospels, all told, record Jesus asked 305 questions: 91 in Matthew, 67 in Mark, 96 in Luke and 49 in John. (See John Zehnder’s article – The 305 Questions Jesus Asked with One Shocking Discovery
Four Things Good Questions Do
You may not realize it now, but questions are your friends and, not only your friends but ultimately, they can become friends of the person you’re talking to, because they can lovingly help to open their eyes to see Jesus for the first time!
1. Questions create conversation
Conversation is key! One of most powerful evangelistic tools is creating conversations. A good question can break a barrier and create an atmosphere for a person to talk naturally and comfortably about spiritual issues. That’s when amazing things can happen!
2. Questions take pressure off you
You don’t have to do all the work.
3. Questions compel people to think
Many haven’t thought through their skepticism
4. Questions can expose a motive or assumption
A person’s motive may be to be difficult, or it may reveal that they genuinely want to know the answer.
Jesus does this all the time! Read through the gospels and highlight the times that Jesus asks those listening to Him a question or answers a question with another question.
Questions can do all of these things!
The first question you need to ask yourself is: What would be a good question with which to begin a conversation, with this specific person, in this specific circumstance, in this amount of time, knowing what I’ve discerned about them, to change the dynamics and open up a dialogue?
